Recreational Respite

Parents and/or others caring for adults with developmental disabilities often need a "break" from their caregiver duties. The ARC of Oswego County provides opportunities for respite, and at the same time offers those with developmental disabilities a chance to pursue their recreational interests.

.

Eligibility:
Individuals must reside with a family member in Oswego County, be 16 years of age or older, and be diagnosed as mentally retarded or developmentally disabled.

The staff:
Staff members work on a part-time basis, and have diverse backgrounds. However, all staff have training and experience with individuals with disabilities. Staff share the common goal of enhancing the lives of those with disabilities through recreation.

The Activities:
This program is consumer centered, and therefore, activities are selected by consumers and their families, and are intended to meet their interests, preferences, and abilities. to museums, shopping, dining out, movies, etc.

Acivities typically last 2-8 hours in duration, and most frequently occur week nights and weekends.

The Cost:
Consumers are responsible for the costs associated with the activity in which they are participating.

Transportation:
The staff person who is working with the consumer will provide door to door transportation.
